The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) assists
individuals challenging sex discrimination in higher education. LAF is the nation's largest legal fund focused on this issue.
Each year the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund's
"Progress in Equity Award" recognizes
a college or university program that has resulted in significant
progress for women on campus. Recipients receive a stipend of up to
$10,000 and public recognition throughout their communities, campus,
and AAUW. Please note that the application deadline is
March 15th. For further information, see the
LAF Advocacy page on the AAUW
website.
In the Birmingham Branch of AAUW, we have two
interest groups which assist in raising funds for LAF: Piecemakers and Creative Needles.
All during the year, the women in these study
groups work at making quilts, blankets, and sweater sets for
Children’s Hospital in Detroit. At the December AAUW meeting, the
members and guests have the opportunity to adopt a quilt, blanket or
sweater set for a five-dollar (minimum) donation which goes to LAF.
Our membership looks forward to this event with great enthusiasm.
We also encourage individuals to contribute to the fund by sending a
check (made out to "Legal Advocacy Fund") to our
Legal Advocacy Fund
Chair, who will forward it to the fund.
The
AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization, so
contributions to the fund are tax deductible for federal income tax
purposes to the full extent allowed by law.
For further information, visit the
Legal Advocacy Fund home
page on the national AAUW website.
